Bagged vs Bulk Mulch: Which Is Actually Cheaper?
The breakeven point for bagged versus bulk mulch — plus when bags win even at a higher per-yard price.

The bulk-vs-bag question doesn't have one right answer. The crossover point depends on three variables: your job size, your local delivery fee, and whether you have a way to haul bags.
The math at typical 2026 prices
Bags at $4.50 each = ~$61 per cubic yard delivered (since you carry them yourself). Bulk at $38/yd³ + $75 delivery = $113 for one yard, $189 for two, $227 for three.
Crossover point
Bulk becomes cheaper at roughly 3 cubic yards in most markets. Below that, the fixed delivery fee dominates. Above 5 yards, bulk is dramatically cheaper — often half the price of bags.
When bags win even above 3 yards
- You can't take a delivery (apartment, condo, narrow driveway, HOA rules)
- You're spreading over multiple weekends and want to pace yourself
- You found a spring sale at 5-for-$10 (drops the per-yard price below $30)
- You need a specific premium or specialty mulch only sold in bags
When bulk wins even below 3 yards
- Multiple neighbors are splitting a delivery
- Your yard has free or cheap delivery (often the case in suburban markets)
- You're matching mulch to an existing bed — bulk is far more consistent in color

- Bag disposal. 30 plastic bags is real garbage.
- Truck rental or pickup hauling for bags if you don't have a vehicle.
- Time. Spreading bulk from a pile is 2–3× faster than from bags.
- Driveway staining. Wet bulk mulch can leave temporary marks on concrete.
The honest rule of thumb
If you need less than 1 cubic yard: bags. 1–3 yards: do the math, it's close. 3+ yards: bulk every time.
