Cedar Mulch: Pros, Cons & When It's Worth the Extra Cost

Cedar costs 50% more than hardwood — but lasts twice as long and naturally repels insects. Here's whether the premium pays off.

Cedar mulch sits at the premium end of the mulch market. The price premium is real — $40–$70 per yard versus $25–$45 for hardwood — and so are the benefits. Whether it's worth it depends on the bed.

Pros of cedar mulch

  • Natural insect repellent — aromatic oils deter ants, termites, moths, and roaches
  • Lasts 2× longer than hardwood — 2–3 years versus 1–2
  • Holds color longer (especially when sun-aged into silver-gray)
  • Cedar oil scent is pleasant near patios and entrances
  • Resists mold and fungus better than hardwood

Cons of cedar mulch

  • Cost: 50–100% more than hardwood
  • Slow decomposition means less soil improvement
  • Can lower soil pH slightly (good for some plants, neutral for most)
  • Scent fades after 6–12 months
  • Insect repellent property doesn't extend to lawn pests

When cedar pays off

Foundation beds against the house — termite and ant deterrence alone justifies the upgrade. Beds near patios and entryways where you'll enjoy the scent. Decorative beds you don't want to refresh annually. Areas with chronic moth or beetle pressure.

When hardwood is just as good

Tree rings far from the house. Backyard beds that no one sees up close. Vegetable garden borders (the slow decomposition is a downside here — you want soil improvement).

The math

Hardwood at $40/yd³ replaced every year = $40/yd³/yr. Cedar at $60/yd³ replaced every 2 years = $30/yd³/yr. Cedar is cheaper over time AND looks better in the meantime.

Buying tips

Cedar is sometimes sold as 'cedar blend' — only a fraction of actual cedar with cheaper wood mixed in. Confirm 100% cedar before paying the premium. Real cedar has a strong aromatic smell when fresh.
