Cocoa Mulch & Pets: Is It Really Dangerous?
Cocoa mulch smells delicious and looks beautiful — but it's toxic to dogs. Here's what to know and what alternatives match the look.

Cocoa bean mulch is gorgeous, smells like chocolate, and contains the same compounds (theobromine and caffeine) that make chocolate toxic to dogs. If you have a dog that gets into the yard, skip it.
What's in cocoa mulch
Discarded cocoa bean shells from chocolate manufacturing. Contains theobromine — the same compound in chocolate. Concentration: 0.7–1.2% theobromine by weight in fresh mulch.
Toxicity to dogs
Toxic dose: ~25 mg/kg body weight. A 50 lb dog eating 2 oz of fresh cocoa mulch can hit that threshold. Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, rapid heart rate. Severe cases: cardiac arrest.
Why dogs eat it
The chocolate smell. Dogs find it irresistible. Even normally non-destructive dogs may sample cocoa mulch out of curiosity.
When it's lower risk
- Weathered mulch (6+ months old) — theobromine concentration drops
- Mulch in beds dogs can't access (fenced front, sealed planters)
- Households without dogs (cats and birds typically ignore it)
Safer alternatives that look similar
- Dark dyed hardwood mulch — visually similar, pet-safe
- Black-dyed mulch — even darker than cocoa
- Aged dark hardwood mulch — fades to similar color in 6 months
What to do if your dog eats it
- Estimate amount consumed
- Call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately
- Watch for vomiting, tremors, rapid breathing
- Get to vet within 1–2 hours if symptoms appear
