How to Fix Common Paint Mistakes (Drips, Streaks, Bleed-Through)

Every painter makes mistakes. Here's how to fix the seven most common ones without starting over.

Painting mistakes are inevitable — even pros make them. The difference is that pros know how to fix mistakes invisibly. Here's the playbook for the seven most common ones.

1. Drips and runs

If wet: brush them out immediately with a dry brush. If dry: wait 24 hours, sand smooth with 220-grit, spot-prime if needed, then repaint that section.

2. Roller marks (stipple texture)

Caused by uneven roller pressure or working over partially dry paint. Fix: light sand, then re-roll a full coat with consistent pressure and a fresh, loaded roller.

3. Tape bleed-through

Caused by removing tape too late (paint has bridged) or pressing tape unevenly. Fix: razor-blade the bleed line carefully, then touch up with a fine brush.

4. Patchy coverage

Most often because you only applied one coat over a color change. Fix: add another full coat — coverage usually requires two.

5. Brush marks

Caused by cheap brushes, paint applied too thick, or working in heat. Fix: light sand, apply a thinner second coat with a quality brush.

6. Color looks different than the chip

Chips look different than fully covered walls in 3D space. Fix: paint a 2x2 sample area first next time. If you've already painted: live with it for 2 weeks before deciding.

7. Wrong sheen

Bought flat when you needed eggshell. Fix: there's no shortcut — repaint the room with the correct sheen.
