Hardwood vs Softwood Mulch: Which Is Right for Your Beds?
Hardwood mats and stays put. Softwood drains better and acidifies soil. Here's how to pick the right one for each bed.

Most homeowners default to hardwood mulch without considering whether it's the right wood for their plants. Here's the real difference between hardwood and softwood mulches.
Hardwood mulch (oak, maple, hickory)
- Dense fibers — mats tightly, suppresses weeds well
- Breaks down in 1–2 years, feeding soil
- Slightly raises soil pH as it decomposes
- Holds dye well
- Cheaper — most common bulk option
Softwood mulch (pine, cedar, cypress, hemlock)
- Looser texture — better drainage
- Decomposes slower (2–3 years)
- Slightly lowers soil pH
- Contains natural compounds that resist fungus and insects
- Lighter in color when fresh
Which plants prefer which
Acid-lovers (azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, hydrangeas, hollies, camellias) → softwood. Alkaline-tolerant or neutral (most perennials, grasses, vegetables, roses) → hardwood. Mixed beds → hardwood is safer.
The nitrogen myth
You may have read that wood mulch 'steals nitrogen' from soil as it decomposes. This only happens when mulch is mixed INTO the soil — surface mulch has minimal effect on plant nitrogen. Don't till mulch into beds.
Weed control comparison
Hardwood wins. The matted layer is harder for weeds to push through. Softwood mulches are looser and let some weeds slip through more easily.
Slope performance
Hardwood wins again — it mats and grips. Softwood (especially pine nuggets) floats and migrates downhill.

If you have a typical mixed perennial-and-shrub bed and don't have a strong reason to pick softwood, go hardwood. It's cheaper, suppresses weeds better, and works for almost everything.
