Paint is more durable than you think — both in the can and on the wall. Here's how long every form of paint actually lasts.

Unopened paint shelf life

  • Latex (water-based): 10 years stored properly
  • Oil-based: 15+ years
  • Chalk paint: 1–5 years (binders break down faster)
  • Acrylic: 10 years

Opened paint shelf life

  • Latex, resealed properly: 2–4 years
  • Oil-based, resealed: 2–7 years
  • If frozen: usually ruined — check before using

Paint life on walls

  • Interior, low-traffic adult bedroom: 8–12 years
  • Interior, living room/hallway: 5–8 years
  • Interior, high-traffic (kids' rooms, kitchen): 3–5 years
  • Exterior wood siding: 5–10 years
  • Exterior stucco: 10–15 years
  • Exterior fiber cement: 15–20 years

Signs paint has gone bad

  • Sour, putrid smell when opened
  • Lumps that won't stir out
  • Layered separation that won't recombine
  • Skin on top that won't break up
