Painting a room well isn't hard — but the difference between a good job and a great one comes down to prep and order. Follow this walkthrough and your room will look professionally finished.

Step 1: Prep the room (1–2 hours)

Move all furniture to the center and cover it. Lay drop cloths on the floor — not plastic, which gets slippery. Remove outlet covers, light switch plates, and any small wall hardware.

Step 2: Patch and sand (30 min)

Fill nail holes with spackle, sand smooth with 220-grit. Light sanding on glossy surfaces helps paint stick. Wipe dust with a tack cloth.

Step 3: Tape edges (45 min)

Use blue painter's tape along trim, ceiling line, and around windows. Press the edge firmly — this is what prevents bleed-through.

Step 4: Prime if needed (1 hour + dry time)

Prime new drywall, large patches, color changes, or any stained area. Skip primer when repainting in a similar color over previously painted walls with quality paint.

Step 5: Cut in edges (1 hour)

Use a 2.5-inch angled brush to paint a 3-inch band around the ceiling, trim, corners, and windows. This is the work no roller can reach.

Step 6: Roll the field (1.5 hours per coat)

Load a 9-inch roller, then paint in a W-pattern: roll on a 3-foot W, then fill it in without lifting the roller. Maintain a wet edge — never let paint partially dry before connecting the next section.

Step 7: Second coat (after 4 hours)

Check the can for recoat time. Most latex paint is ready in 2–4 hours. Apply the second coat exactly the same way.

Step 8: Trim and doors (1–2 hours)

Use a fine brush and semi-gloss paint. Remove tape while the last coat is still slightly tacky for the cleanest line.

Step 9: Cleanup (30 min)

Wash brushes and rollers immediately. Reinstall outlet covers. Move furniture back the next day after paint cures.
