Why Your Mulch Fades to Gray (And 4 Ways to Keep It Dark)

That rich dark brown mulch you spread in April? It's silvery gray by August. Here's why mulch fades and what actually works to keep it looking fresh.

Why mulch fades

UV radiation bleaches the lignin in wood, shifting brown to gray. Rain leaches surface pigments. Microbial breakdown removes the dark organic compounds at the surface. All three happen continuously — fading is inevitable for plain mulch.

Option 1: dyed mulch

Iron-oxide and carbon-based dyes are far more UV-stable than natural wood color. Quality dyed mulch holds color 9–12 months. Cheap dyed mulch fades in 3–4 months — the dye matters as much as the dye type.

Option 2: cedar or cypress

These woods don't stay brown — they fade to a silvery weathered look that many find attractive. Aesthetic difference: gray hardwood looks tired; gray cedar looks intentional.

Option 3: mulch dye spray

Sold in concentrate at home centers. Spray refresh existing faded mulch — extends the color year another season for about $30 per gallon (covers 2,000+ sq ft). Skip if you're already going to top up with fresh mulch.

Option 4: annual top-dressing

The most reliable answer. Add 1 inch of fresh mulch each spring — it costs less than a full re-mulch and the color refresh is permanent (until next year).

When fading is actually okay

Side and back beds nobody sees up close — fading is fine. Save the dye premium and annual top-ups for the front-yard beds visible from the street.

Just rake it

Mulch fades on the surface, not all the way down. A vigorous raking can expose darker undertones from underneath — a free instant refresh that buys you another month or two.

What doesn't work

Watering doesn't restore color. Sealants and 'mulch lock' products are mostly marketing — they bind mulch in place but don't preserve color. Save your money.
