Mulch Cost Per Yard: 2026 Price Guide (Bagged, Bulk & Delivered)
What mulch actually costs per cubic yard, per bag, and per square foot — plus how to spot a markup and what changes the price.

Mulch pricing is more variable than almost any other landscaping material. The same hardwood mulch can cost $28 or $58 per cubic yard within a 20-mile radius. Here's how the price breaks down and what to expect in 2026.
Bulk mulch: typical 2026 prices
- Plain hardwood: $25–$45 per cubic yard
- Dyed (black, brown, red): $30–$55 per yard
- Cedar: $40–$70 per yard
- Cypress: $35–$60 per yard
- Pine bark nuggets: $35–$50 per yard
- Premium / triple-shredded: $45–$70 per yard
Bagged mulch: typical prices
- Standard 2-cu-ft bag: $3.50–$5.50 (sale season as low as $2)
- Cedar 2-cu-ft bag: $5–$8
- Premium dyed 2-cu-ft bag: $4–$7
13.5 bags = 1 cubic yard. So $4.50 bags work out to $61 per yard — usually a premium over bulk, unless you catch a 5-for-$10 spring sale.
Delivery fees
Most bulk yards charge $50–$150 for delivery within a 10–15 mile radius, with surcharges for farther runs or weekend drops. A few yards waive delivery on orders of 5+ cubic yards.
Spreading and installation
If you hire it out, expect $30–$75 per cubic yard installed on top of material. A pro spreads roughly 2 yd³/hour. Total installed cost: $65–$130 per yard.
Cost per square foot covered (at 3 inches deep)
- Bulk hardwood (DIY): $0.30–$0.50/sq ft
- Bagged (DIY): $0.45–$0.70/sq ft
- Bulk installed by pro: $0.85–$1.40/sq ft

- Dye — adds $5–$15/yard for color stability.
- Wood species — cedar and cypress carry a 50–100% premium over hardwood.
- Bag size shrinkage — 2 cu ft used to be the norm; some 'value' bags now ship at 1.5 cu ft.
- Spring peak demand — April–May prices run 10–20% higher than fall.
- Delivery distance — every extra 5 miles can add $25.
How to negotiate
Call three yards. Ask about: minimum delivery, fuel surcharge, weekend fee, and any discount on orders above 5 yards. Bulk yards almost always have flexibility on delivery; rarely on material price.
