Best Mulch for Vegetable Gardens (And What to Avoid)

Vegetable gardens have different rules than ornamental beds. The shredded hardwood that looks great in your foundation bed is the wrong choice around tomatoes. Here's what to use and why.

What to use

• Straw (NOT hay) — gold standard for warm-season crops
• Shredded leaves — free, breaks down into compost
• Grass clippings — thin layers only, untreated lawns only
• Pine straw — for blueberries, strawberries, and acid-lovers
• Compost — doubles as feeding the soil

What to avoid

• Dyed wood mulch — unnecessary in vegetable beds
• Rubber mulch — leaches heavy metals near food
• Hay — full of seeds that become weeds

Crop-by-crop guide

Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant

2–3 inches of straw or shredded leaves. Wait until soil is 65°F+. Helps prevent soil splashing onto leaves (the source of blight).

Cucumbers, squash, melons

Straw is ideal — keeps fruit clean and dry. Apply when vines start running.

Strawberries
