White Fungus on Mulch: What It Is and What to Do
Strange white, yellow, or orange growths on your mulch are usually harmless — but here's how to identify the few that aren't.

Wood mulch is organic matter — fungus is supposed to grow on it. Most of what you see is harmless. A few growths look alarming but are still fine. Here's how to tell.
Slime molds (most common)
Bright yellow, white, or orange jelly-like masses, often called 'dog vomit slime mold.' Appears overnight, especially after rain. Completely harmless to plants, pets, and humans. Lifecycle: 2–4 days, then it dries and disappears. Rake it out if appearance bothers you.
Artillery fungus (the annoying one)
Tiny cream-colored cup-like fruiting bodies. Shoots sticky black spore masses up to 20 feet — they stick to siding, windows, and cars like tar and are nearly impossible to remove. The one mulch fungus that's actually a problem. Solution: replace mulch with bark nuggets or fresh hardwood; artillery fungus prefers older decomposed mulch.
Bird's nest fungus
Tiny structures that look like miniature bird nests with eggs. Harmless to everything. Just decorative oddity.
Stinkhorns
Phallic-looking fungi that smell like rotting meat. Harmless but unpleasant. Pluck them and dispose; they're short-lived.
Mushrooms
Various species. Usually harmless to plants. May be toxic if eaten, so remove if pets or kids might investigate.
White stringy growth (mycelium)
Looks like spider webs or cotton candy. This is actually beneficial — fungal mycelium breaking down wood and feeding soil. Leave it alone.
Why fungus appears
- Excess moisture (over-watered or poorly drained beds)
- Thick mulch layers (over 4 inches)
- Warm, humid weather
- Fresh mulch with high carbon content
Prevention
- Don't mulch over 3 inches deep
- Rake and fluff mulch occasionally to improve air flow
- Improve bed drainage if water pools
- In bad years, swap to inorganic mulch (rock) in problem beds
Plan a refresh that keeps depth at 3 inches — under-watered and over-mulched beds breed fungus.

Only artillery fungus and large mushroom flushes near plants. Everything else is cosmetic or beneficial. Don't reach for fungicide; it doesn't work well on mulch fungi and isn't worth the effort.
