Rock landscaping is sold as the maintenance-free alternative to mulch. It's not. Each material wins in specific situations — picking wrong wastes thousands of dollars.

Where rock wins

• Drainage areas, dry creek beds, downspout splashes

The maintenance lie

Rock doesn't decompose, but leaves, dirt, and seeds still land on it. Within 2 years you're either blowing it out monthly, weeding through it, or spraying herbicide. Cleaning rock is slower and dirtier than refreshing mulch.

Heat impact

Light-colored rock reflects heat; dark rock absorbs and re-radiates it. Either way, rock raises soil and air temperature in summer by 5–15°F — bad for most plants near foundations and a real comfort issue near patios.

Resale value

Use rock strategically: dry creek beds, drainage paths, and one or two design accents. Use mulch everywhere else. This combines the right tool for each job and beats picking just one.
