Most paint projects come in 20–30% over budget. It's never the paint — it's the three categories everyone forgets to include. Here's how to build a realistic budget.

The base cost formula

  • DIY materials: paintable sq ft × $0.50
  • Pro labor + materials: paintable sq ft × $3
  • Premium tier: add 20% for any premium paint or specialty finish

Hidden cost #1: prep

Wall repair, hole patching, sanding, caulking. Pros build this into their quote; DIYers forget it. Budget $50–$200 in materials and 25% of total time.

Hidden cost #2: primer

If you're going light-over-dark, painting bare drywall, or covering stains, you need primer. That's another $25–$60 in materials per project.

Hidden cost #3: tools (DIY only)

First-time DIYers spend $100–$200 on brushes, rollers, tape, drop cloths, and a putty knife. Amortize this over multiple projects — the cost per project drops fast.

Sample DIY budget for a bedroom

  • Paint (3 gallons): $135
  • Primer (1 gallon): $30
  • Tools (first time): $120
  • Tape, drop cloth, supplies: $40
  • Total: $325

Sample pro budget for same bedroom

$500–$800 for materials and labor. The pro premium is justified for cabinets, two-story exteriors, and whole-house jobs — but a single bedroom is the perfect DIY scope.
