Paint sheen is measured in 'gloss units' from 0 (dead flat) to 100 (mirror). The level you pick changes how the paint looks, how it holds up, and what you can clean.

Flat (0–5 gloss)

  • Look: chalky, matte, zero light reflection
  • Hides imperfections: best
  • Scrubbability: poor (don't try)
  • Best for: ceilings, formal rooms, low-traffic walls

Eggshell (10–25 gloss)

  • Look: soft glow like the inside of an eggshell
  • Hides imperfections: very good
  • Scrubbability: light cleaning OK
  • Best for: bedrooms, living rooms, hallways

Satin (25–35 gloss)

  • Look: smooth pearl-like sheen
  • Hides imperfections: moderate
  • Scrubbability: handles scrubbing well
  • Best for: kids' rooms, bathrooms, kitchens

Semi-gloss (35–70 gloss)

  • Look: noticeable shine
  • Hides imperfections: poor (shows everything)
  • Scrubbability: excellent
  • Best for: trim, doors, cabinets, bathroom walls

High-gloss (70+ gloss)

  • Look: mirror finish
  • Hides imperfections: terrible
  • Scrubbability: maximum
  • Best for: front doors, statement pieces, furniture
