Flat vs Eggshell vs Satin vs Semi-Gloss: Side-by-Side
The full sheen comparison: appearance, durability, scrubbability, and where each shines.

Paint sheen is measured in 'gloss units' from 0 (dead flat) to 100 (mirror). The level you pick changes how the paint looks, how it holds up, and what you can clean.
Flat (0–5 gloss)
- Look: chalky, matte, zero light reflection
- Hides imperfections: best
- Scrubbability: poor (don't try)
- Best for: ceilings, formal rooms, low-traffic walls
Eggshell (10–25 gloss)
- Look: soft glow like the inside of an eggshell
- Hides imperfections: very good
- Scrubbability: light cleaning OK
- Best for: bedrooms, living rooms, hallways
Satin (25–35 gloss)
- Look: smooth pearl-like sheen
- Hides imperfections: moderate
- Scrubbability: handles scrubbing well
- Best for: kids' rooms, bathrooms, kitchens
Semi-gloss (35–70 gloss)
- Look: noticeable shine
- Hides imperfections: poor (shows everything)
- Scrubbability: excellent
- Best for: trim, doors, cabinets, bathroom walls
High-gloss (70+ gloss)
- Look: mirror finish
- Hides imperfections: terrible
- Scrubbability: maximum
- Best for: front doors, statement pieces, furniture
