The Essential Painting Tools Checklist (Buy Once, Use for Years)

The right tools are the difference between a 4-hour pro-looking job and an 8-hour streaky mess. Plan to spend $100–$150 on quality tools that last decades.

Brushes ($25–$40)

• 2.5-inch angled sash brush (Purdy or Wooster) — the workhorse
• 2-inch trim brush
• 1-inch detail brush for tight corners

Rollers ($20–$30)

• 9-inch roller frame (Purdy or Wooster)
• Roller covers: 3/8" nap for smooth walls, 1/2" for light texture
• 4-inch mini roller for tight spaces
• Extension pole — 4 ft minimum

Tray and setup ($15)

• Metal paint tray + 3-pack of disposable liners
• Paint can opener (free at the store)
• Stirring sticks (free at the store)

Tape and protection ($25)

• Blue painter's tape (1.5" and 2")
• Canvas drop cloths (heavier and reusable; not plastic)
• Plastic sheeting for furniture

Prep tools ($30)

• 5-in-1 painter's tool (scraper, putty knife, can opener)
• Spackle and putty knife
• 120-grit and 220-grit sandpaper
• Tack cloth for dust removal

Cleaning matters

Wash brushes and rollers immediately after each use with warm water (latex) or mineral spirits (oil-based). A $15 Purdy brush cleaned properly lasts 10+ years.
