Concrete Finishing Techniques: Broom, Trowel, Exposed Aggregate

Each finish has a place — here's when to use each and how they affect price, look, and traction.

The finish you choose changes the look, the slip resistance, and the price. Five common options:

Broom finish

Standard for driveways and exterior walkways. Light texture from a stiff broom dragged across nearly set concrete. Best slip resistance per dollar.

Trowel finish

Smooth, slightly polished. Standard for interior garage floors. Slippery when wet — don't use outdoors.

Exposed aggregate

Surface paste washed away to expose the stone underneath. Highly decorative, very slip-resistant. Adds $3–$6/sq ft.

Stamped

Pressed patterns mimic stone, brick, or wood. Doubles the cost vs plain.

Salt finish

Rock salt pressed into the surface then washed out, leaving small pits. Common around pools for traction.
