Concrete keeps gaining strength for years, but the milestones that matter for normal use happen in the first 28 days.

Hour 0–6: initial set

Concrete becomes too stiff to finish. No foot traffic.

24 hours: light foot traffic

You can walk on it carefully. No tools, no heavy loads.

7 days: ~70% strength

Light vehicles OK. Most of the curing reaction is done. Continue keeping the surface damp through this point.

28 days: design strength

Full traffic, full loads. Sealing and staining can start.

Speeding it up

Type III high-early cement or accelerator admixtures get you to 70% in 3 days instead of 7. Useful for repair work that must reopen fast.
