How Much Concrete Do I Need? Patio, Driveway, Footings
Real cubic-yard numbers for every common project — plus exactly how many bags or how big a truck to order.
Every project type has a different math. Here are the most common ones, worked out.
10x10 patio at 4" thick
100 sq ft × 4/12 = 33.3 cu ft. ÷ 27 = 1.23 yd³. Add 10% → order 1.4 yd³ (a truck minimum).
16x20 driveway at 5" thick
320 × 5/12 = 133.3 cu ft. ÷ 27 = 4.94 yd³. Add 10% → 5.5 yd³.
30-ft footing trench, 8" wide × 16" deep
30 × (8/12) × (16/12) = 26.67 cu ft. ÷ 27 = 0.99 yd³. Add 10% → 1.1 yd³.
Bags or truck?
Under 1 yd³, bagged is cheaper. Above that, ready-mix wins on cost and saves hours of mixing.
