Rebar vs. Wire Mesh: Which Reinforcement Is Right?

Cost, strength, ease of installation — when to choose rebar, when wire mesh is enough.

All concrete shrinks. Reinforcement keeps the inevitable cracks tight enough that water and dirt can't make them worse.

Wire mesh — cheap and fast

6x6 W2.9 welded wire mesh costs about $0.30/sq ft. Perfect for 4" patios, walkways, and shed pads.

Rebar — stronger and required for structural slabs

#4 (1/2") bars in a 16–24" grid run $0.50–$1.00/sq ft installed. Mandatory for driveways, garage floors, and any slab over 4" thick.

Position matters more than which you choose

Reinforcement only works in the middle of the slab thickness. Lying on the dirt = useless. Use chairs or mesh supports.
