Removing Old Concrete: DIY, Cost, and Disposal
Renting an electric jackhammer, finding a recycler, and what removal actually costs.

Demolition is half the cost of any concrete replacement project. Doing it yourself can save $1,500 on a typical driveway.
Cost to hire
$2–$6 per square foot including haul-away. Reinforced concrete (rebar, mesh) runs at the high end because of cutting time.
DIY tools
- Electric jackhammer rental — $75–$100/day
- Sledgehammer for hand-breaking edges
- Bolt cutters or angle grinder for rebar
- Wheelbarrow and pickup truck for hauling
Disposal
Concrete recyclers accept clean rubble for free or for a small fee. Landfills charge $50–$120 per ton.
