Freedom Coach™

Chore chart: ~$10.50/kid/week — $1,092/yr for 2 kids.

Effective hourly: $6.30/hr. Age-9 benchmarks: 3–8 chores/wk under age 8, 8–15 under age 12.

  • Split earnings into 3 buckets: 40% Save, 40% Spend, 20% Give — teaches long-term thinking.
  • Non-negotiable "family contribution" chores (dishes, tidying rooms) should NOT be paid — pay only for extras.
  • Review the chart every 6 months — kids age out of easy chores fast.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I pay per chore?

Most families use $0.25–$1.00 per chore for younger kids and $1–$3 for older kids/teens. The exact amount matters less than consistency and follow-through.

Should chores be tied to allowance?

There are two schools of thought: (1) split model — basic 'family contribution' chores are unpaid, and 'extra' chores earn money; (2) full commission — every chore pays. Split model teaches responsibility AND work ethic.

How many chores per week is appropriate?

Ages 4–7: 3–6 chores/wk. Ages 8–11: 6–12 chores/wk. Ages 12+: 10–15 chores/wk. Focus on age-appropriate skill-building.

What are good chores by age?

4–6: put toys away, feed pets. 7–9: dishes, laundry sorting, take out trash. 10–12: laundry, vacuum, meal prep help. 13+: full laundry, meal prep, yard work, tutor siblings.

Should we do a physical chart or an app?

Under 10: physical chart with stickers wins for engagement. Over 10: apps like Greenlight, Rooster, or a shared spreadsheet work well and teach digital financial literacy.
