Frequently asked questions

How much does Medicare cost per month?

Base Part B is ~$185/mo (2025). Add Part D ($40–$60), and either Medigap ($120–$250) or Medicare Advantage ($0–$100). Higher earners pay IRMAA on top.

Original Medicare + Medigap or Medicare Advantage?

Original + Medigap: broader access, higher premium, lower out-of-pocket. Advantage: lower premium, network limits, extras (dental/vision), higher OOP when you use it.

What's IRMAA?

Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount — a Part B and Part D surcharge for higher earners. Kicks in above $106k single / $212k joint (2025) and uses income from 2 years ago.

When do I enroll?

3 months before to 3 months after your 65th birthday (Initial Enrollment Period). Missing it triggers permanent 10%/year Part B late penalties.

Can I switch plans later?

Advantage plans: change during Annual Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7). Medigap: guaranteed acceptance only during your initial 6-month window — after that, insurers can medically underwrite.
