Frequently asked questions

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

Popularized by Elizabeth Warren, the rule allocates take-home pay into 50% needs (rent, food, utilities), 30% wants (dining, hobbies), and 20% savings & debt payoff. It's a starting frame — you can tune the split.

Should I use gross or take-home pay?

Take-home. Budget from the dollars that actually hit your bank account after taxes, health insurance, 401(k), and other pre-tax deductions.

What if I get paid every 2 weeks?

Two months a year you'll get 3 paychecks — treat those as bonus months for extra savings or debt payoff, not for lifestyle inflation.

How is this different from a full budget planner?

This tool sizes your monthly buckets from a single paycheck. Our Budget Planner tracks every category. Use this to set targets, then track against them.
