Freedom Coach™

Your 73-year-old RMD: $16,981 (owe ~$3,736 in tax).

Over 10 years you'll withdraw $218,890 and pay $48,156 in taxes on it.

  • Missing an RMD triggers a 25% penalty — set an auto-withdrawal by 12/15 each year.
  • Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): send up to $105k/yr directly to charity from IRA — counts as RMD, avoids taxes.
  • Roth accounts have NO RMDs during the owner's life — converting early lowers future RMDs.

Frequently asked questions

When do RMDs start?

Age 73 for those turning 72 after 2022. Rising to 75 in 2033 under SECURE 2.0. Applies to Traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and similar pre-tax accounts.

What's the penalty for missing an RMD?

25% of the amount you failed to withdraw (down from 50%). Corrected within 2 years drops it to 10%. Set an auto-withdrawal by Dec 15.

How is my RMD calculated?

Prior year-end balance ÷ IRS Uniform Lifetime Table divisor for your age. At 73 the divisor is 26.5; each year it shrinks so RMDs get larger.

Do Roth accounts have RMDs?

Roth IRAs: no RMDs during your lifetime. Roth 401(k): no more RMDs starting 2024. Inherited Roth IRAs DO have RMD rules.

How can I reduce RMDs?

Roth conversions in low-income years before 73, Qualified Charitable Distributions (up to $105k/yr direct to charity), and delaying Social Security to spread income.
