Frequently asked questions

How much tile do I need?

Take the area square footage and add 10% waste for straight-set, 15% for diagonal or patterned installs. Round up to full boxes.

Do I need thinset AND grout?

Yes. Thinset bonds the tile to the substrate; grout fills the joints. A typical bag of thinset covers ~90 sq ft and a bag of grout covers ~100 sq ft.

What size tile is easiest to install?

12×12 or 12×24 for floors, 3×6 subway for walls. Small mosaic and 24×48 large-format tile are both harder — leave those to a pro.

How much does professional tile installation cost?

$7–$14/sq ft for standard porcelain; more for mosaics, patterns, or floor heat. Bathroom floors add $250–$500 for waterproofing prep.

Should I seal grout?

Yes, unless it's epoxy. Cement grout is porous and will stain within months in wet areas. Reseal every 1–2 years.
